British scientists seemed to have been watching a lot of Star Trek lately. They are planning to build a giant deflector just like the one on the Starship Enterprise. It will be used to try and protect astronauts from cosmic radiation and solar flares. Magnetic shields would also be placed around future spacecraft and on the surface of planets to deflect dangerous rays. Without such technology it would probably be impossible for humans to spend much time away from earth. Researchers want to eventually launch a test satellite equipped with a prototype to see if it can actually work.

Let’s talk therapeutic human cloning. It’s lived in the domain of science fiction for a long, long time now but that could be about to change. American scientists claim they’ve successfully managed to design embryotic stem cells from cloned monkey embryos. This ground breaking move could eventually allow researchers to create human embryotic stem cells without embryos thus avoiding all that political heat. Instead they’d be derived from cloned adult body cells a process that would dramatically lower the risk of possible rejection. The team hopes their discovery will pave the way to developing effective treatments for all kinds of serious diseases.
